Juniors
Juniors is for players aged 13-14. This is a transitional division for
between Little League Majors and High School baseball.
Juniors is a competitive program, but during the regular season, NOLL/SOLL
places the emphasis on fundamentals, not on winning.
Players must go thru the tryout process to be drafted to a team. Since
teams are formed by draft, practice conflicts and buddy requests can not
be honored. NOLL/SOLL Juniors teams are traditionally coached by coaches
without kids playing in the division. Siblings playing in the same age division will be
placed on a team together.
Juniors overlaps with the High School baseball season, so players aged 14
who make a HS team (Freshman, JV or Varsity) will be moved to the Seniors
division.
Juniors is the first Little League division which allows leads, and several
key skills (taking leads, stealing bases, pitching from the stretch) are
introduced at this level.
Tryouts and draft happen in late February. The
season usually begins in late March and ends in mid June. There are two
games per weekend with occasional weekday games.
One practice is held a week at a field, day and time determined by
your coach.
Games and practices are held on various ball fields in Berkeley, Oakland and Piedmont. Field
allocations are determined every year by the city councils and therefore vary from year to year.
Juniors is played on an 80-foot diamond with a pitching distance of 56 feet.
Players receive a team hat, jersey, pants, belt and socks from the league (belt and jersey must be returned).
Helmets, catcher’s gear, balls, bats and bases are provided by the league. Players bring baseball
mitts, socks and baseball cleats (metal cleats are allowed).
NOLL/SOLL is entirely run by volunteers.
Every family is expected to volunteer for both league level and team level jobs. The volunteer sign-up for league level positions is on the back of the registration form and must be completed in order to accept the registration. Each team is required to designate 3 adult, trained umpires. Coaches will describe the various team level volunteer positions required which include field set-up parents, Bat-a-Thon fundraiser parent and safety parent.
