Q: What are the levels of play?
A: Peanuts (7-8s), generally for first-year ballplayers; coach-pitch
A Minors (8-9s), also coach-pitch, generally for second years
AA Minors (9-11)
AAA Minors (10-12, though some 9s play up)
Majors (11-12, though some 10s play up)
Juniors (13-14)
Seniors (15-16, though some 14s play up)
Big League (17-18)

Q: What are the NOLL/SOLL Boundaries?
A: The boundaries from which we can select players are set and approved by National Little League in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Players who reside south of Cedar Street in Berkeley, north of Golf Links Road in Oakland and east of San Pablo Avenue and the MacArthur Freeway (interstate 580) are eligible to play in our leagues and in post season competition as sanctioned by Little league Baseball. For the 2007 regular season only, we have received special dispensation from Williamsport to accept players who reside in unserved areas along our borders (west of San Pablo, southwest of 580). These players will be ineligible for any postseason play.

Q: How are players assigned to teams?
A: We go by the (Little League) book, which encourages wide distribution of talent. 7- and 8-year-olds are assigned to teams. ALL PLAYERS 9 YEARS OLD AND ABOVE MUST TAKE PART IN A TRY-OUT AND BE EVALUATED BY MANAGERS. To achieve parity among teams and avoid ‘ringers’ stocking superteams, players are ’drafted’ onto teams on a round-robin basis. Because competitive balance is paramount, special requests to be assigned to a team with a particular person cannot be heeded above Peanuts and ‘A’ Minors.

Q: What if I cannot attend tryouts at the designated time?
A: You must obtain approval to attend a special tryout which will occur prior to the regular date. You are urged to make arrangements, no later that ten days before the designated tryout date. Contact info for your division can be found on the Tryouts page at left. Players CANNOT be placed on teams without participating in a tryout/evaluation.

Q: What about eligibility for post-season play?
A: Membership on NOLL/SOLL All-Star teams will be by residence.

Q: How many games and practices?
A: All teams play and practice at least once per week, with additional practices in the preseason. In upper LL divisions and Seniors, there are often two games per week, on weekend and evening nights. For example, Seniors and LL Majors and AAA Minors play about 20 games.

Q: Where are games and practices?
A: Games and practices vary from year to year depending on field availability; please consider this a general guideline: Seniors: Front Caldecott, Willard and King Jr. High, Bushrod and Witter High School.
Little League: Chabot, Holy Names, and Oakland Army Base
AAA: Caldecott, Jones, Golden Gate, and Oakland Army Base
Peanuts, A and AA: Linda Beach, Oakland Army Base, Montera, Coaches, Hampton, and Dracena

Q: When do practices, games start and end?
A: Practices begin immediately upon team formation. The season begins in mid-March and lasts through mid-June (no games on Easter weekend).

Q: How are NOLL/SOLL financed?
A: Registration/participation fees cover only about 35% of our costs, which will exceed $140,000. The balance comes from the annual Bat-a-thon, in which players raise money by soliciting sponsors to donate for each foot distance achieved in a special hitting contest.

Q: What is required of LL families?
A: We ask that each family participate in some way, which can include umpiring, coaching, field prep, uniforms and equipment, fundraising, administration, etc. There will be a meeting of each team’s families soon after team formation to obtain commitments. Each team is required to field at least 3 adult umpires.
